Hudayriyat Beach

Aerial view of Hudayriyat Island in Abu Dhabi at midday: a sandy beach curves along the Arabian Gulf with the rectangular blue oval of an artificial surf-park lagoon visible inland, surrounded by paved cycle paths winding through coastal scrubland

الإمارات العربية المتحدة

Hudayriyat Beach is the public coastline of Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi's newest master-planned leisure district on the capital's southern shore. Where Yas Island leans on theme parks and Saadiyat on cultural institutions, Hudayriyat is built around active sport — soft white-sand beach segments, the headline Surf Abu Dhabi wave pool, an Olympic-standard skate park, a purpose-built mountain bike trail network, and roughly 22 kilometres of paved cycle loops, most of it free to use. The island opened in stages from 2021 onwards and is still expanding, but the core beach, paths, and food cluster are fully operational. This guide covers what's at Hudayriyat, how to get there, and how it compares to the other Abu Dhabi beach options.

What's at Hudayriyat

Hudayriyat is best understood as a cluster of activity zones strung along the southern coast and connected by a continuous cycle and pedestrian network. You can spend a half day on a single facility or hop between them on the paths.

The Beach

The southern shoreline of the island is divided into several beach segments — soft white sand, gently shelving entry, calm western Gulf water with minimal current. Most sections are free public access with showers, basic shaded seating, and lifeguard cover during posted hours. Beach volleyball courts are set up on the sand at the main public stretch, and there are children's play areas backing onto the dunes. Compared with Saadiyat the sand is similar quality; compared with Corniche the water is cleaner and the crowds noticeably smaller on weekdays.

Surf Abu Dhabi

The headline attraction is Surf Abu Dhabi, a large artificial wave pool built using Kelly Slater Wave Co technology — at opening, one of the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. The pool produces ride-able, shaped waves on a controlled cycle, with sessions sold separately by skill level (from beginner whitewater up to advanced overhead). Boards, wetsuits, and instruction are available on site. Sessions are paid (approximately AED 300+ depending on level and duration) and book out at weekends — reserve in advance. There's a viewing deck and a café for non-surfing companions.

Cycle and Running Network

Hudayriyat has the most extensive purpose-built cycle network in Abu Dhabi. The paved system is paint-separated from pedestrian paths and broken into signposted 5 km, 8 km, and 22 km loops so you can pick a distance to match the heat. Surface is fully paved, lit on the central sections, and stroller- and wheelchair-accessible on the inner loops. Bike rental kiosks operate near the main car parks; most riders bring their own. Runners use the same network — the inner 5 km loop is the popular morning run, comparable in feel to the Saadiyat Beach Running Track but flatter and quieter.

Mountain Bike Park

Separate from the road-cycle network, the Hudayriyat Mountain Bike Park is a purpose-built MTB facility with graded trails — green for beginners through to black for technical descents. It is the only dedicated, signed MTB park in Abu Dhabi emirate. Hire bikes, helmets, and basic instruction are bookable at the trailhead.

Skate and BMX Park

The on-island skate park is concrete, Olympic-standard, and free to enter. It has bowl, street, and BMX sections and is used by both casual riders and competitive skaters; it occasionally hosts events. Helmets are required for under-18s.

Padel, Tennis, and Other Courts

Padel is the fastest-growing sport in the UAE, and Hudayriyat has a substantial cluster of bookable padel and tennis courts near the main activity hub. Booking is by the hour through the on-island operator's app. Beach volleyball nets are free to use on first-come basis.

Bab Al Nojoum Beach Resort

The eco-cabin glamping site Bab Al Nojoum sits at the western end of the island. Wooden cabins on the sand with private decks and shared facilities, from approximately AED 600+ per night depending on cabin type and season. It's the only on-island overnight option and a popular weekend escape from central AD.

Food and Drink

The food cluster is small but growing — a handful of cafés, smoothie kiosks, and casual restaurants near the main beach and surf-park entrance, plus seasonal pop-ups. Cuisines lean towards healthy, brunch, and grab-and-go to match the active-day audience. Don't expect the breadth of Mamsha Al Saadiyat; do expect post-ride coffee and decent breakfast.

Getting There

By Car

Hudayriyat is connected to the main Abu Dhabi island by a signposted bridge / causeway from the southern Corniche side. From central Abu Dhabi (Corniche), allow about 20–25 minutes outside rush hour. From Yas Island, allow 35–40 minutes. From Saadiyat, around 30 minutes. Free parking lots sit beside each major activity zone — near the beach, near Surf Abu Dhabi, near the MTB trailhead, and near the skate park.

By Taxi or Ride-Hailing

Standard Abu Dhabi taxis, Careem, and Uber all serve Hudayriyat. A one-way fare from central AD is approximately AED 40–60. Note that on-island return rides can be slow to find at quieter hours — book before you finish your activity.

By Bus

Public bus service to the island is limited compared with Saadiyat and Yas. Most visitors arrive by car or taxi.

From Dubai

Hudayriyat is approximately 150 km / 90 minutes by car from Dubai Marina via the E11. Most Dubai visitors combine it with a wider Abu Dhabi day — Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Corniche are both en route — though dedicated surfers and cyclists do drive down for the day or stay overnight at Bab Al Nojoum.

Best Time to Visit

  • October to April — comfortable from sunrise to evening. Sunset on the beach (around 5–7 p.m.) is the most popular slot; the cycle loops are at their busiest on Friday and Saturday mornings.
  • May to September — daytime activity outdoors is impractical. The beach and paths are usable before about 8 a.m. or after about 8 p.m. Surf Abu Dhabi runs year-round and is one of the better summer-day options because the water cools you off; some MTB trails close in extreme heat.

For surfing specifically, weekday morning sessions are easiest to book and least crowded. For cycling, sunrise rides on the 22 km loop are the signature Hudayriyat experience.

Practical Notes

  • Beach access is 24/7; specific facilities (Surf Abu Dhabi, MTB rentals, padel courts) operate posted hours typically morning to evening
  • Modest swimwear is appreciated in family areas
  • Pets are permitted on lead in some sections — check signage on arrival
  • The island is alcohol-free in public areas; licensed venues are limited
  • Lifeguards cover the main public beach during posted hours only
  • Helmets are required at the skate park for under-18s and on the MTB trails
  • Free Wi-Fi covers most activity zones
  • Lights on the inner cycle loops extend usable hours into the evening; the outer 22 km loop is partially unlit
  • Book Surf Abu Dhabi and padel in advance, especially at weekends

Nearby

Combine Hudayriyat with the rest of Abu Dhabi's southern coast and Corniche side. The Corniche Beach Running Track is 20–25 minutes back across the bridge for a flat sunset run. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is roughly 25 minutes inland — a natural pairing on the drive in or out from Dubai. Saadiyat Island (Saadiyat Beach Running Track, Louvre Abu Dhabi) is about 30 minutes north-east. Yas Beach and the Yas Island theme parks are 35–40 minutes further. For a contrast within the same day, central AD's heritage sites at Qasr Al Hosn are 20 minutes from the bridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hudayriyat Beach?

Hudayriyat Beach is the public coastline of Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi's newest master-planned active-leisure development. It combines free white-sand beach segments with a major artificial wave pool (Surf Abu Dhabi), a 22 km cycle network, a mountain bike park, an Olympic-standard skate park, and a small food cluster.

Is Hudayriyat Beach free?

The beach itself and most of the cycle and pedestrian paths are free to use. Specific facilities are paid separately — Surf Abu Dhabi sessions (approximately AED 300+), MTB bike rentals, padel and tennis court bookings, and overnight stays at Bab Al Nojoum.

Where is Hudayriyat Island?

Hudayriyat Island sits on the southern coast of Abu Dhabi, connected to the main island by a signposted bridge / causeway. It is approximately 20 kilometres / 25 minutes from the Corniche by car. Note that this is a different island from Yas, which lies to the north-east.

What is Surf Abu Dhabi?

Surf Abu Dhabi is a large artificial wave pool on Hudayriyat Island, built using Kelly Slater Wave Co technology — one of the largest surf parks in the world. It produces shaped, ride-able waves on a controlled cycle, with paid sessions sold by skill level. Boards, wetsuits, and instruction are available on site, and booking ahead is strongly advised at weekends.

How do I get to Hudayriyat from central Abu Dhabi?

Drive across the signposted Hudayriyat bridge from the southern Corniche side — about 20–25 minutes outside rush hour. Free parking is provided next to each activity zone. Taxis and Careem cost approximately AED 40–60 each way.

Can you cycle at Hudayriyat?

Yes — Hudayriyat has the most extensive purpose-built cycle network in Abu Dhabi. The paved system has signposted 5 km, 8 km, and 22 km loops, separate from pedestrian paths. Bike rental is available at kiosks near the main car parks. There is also a separate signed mountain bike park with graded trails for off-road riding.

Is Hudayriyat family-friendly?

Yes. The beach is calm and shallow, lifeguards cover posted hours, and there are children's play areas, beach volleyball, and gentle inner cycle loops suitable for kids on bikes. The skate park, MTB trails, and surf park have age and skill restrictions but cater for families with energetic older children. Modest swimwear is appreciated in family areas.

How does Hudayriyat compare to Yas Beach?

Yas Beach is hotel-concession-led and pairs naturally with the Yas theme parks and Yas Marina; Hudayriyat is active-sport-led, with the surf park, MTB trails, skate park, and 22 km cycle loops as the core draw. Hudayriyat is newer, still developing, and substantially less crowded on weekdays. For a sunbed-and-cocktails day, choose Yas; for a "do something" day, choose Hudayriyat.

When is the best time to visit Hudayriyat?

October to April for daytime activity — early morning rides, late-afternoon beach. From May to September, go before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m., or use indoor / water-based facilities like Surf Abu Dhabi, which runs year-round.

Are there restaurants on Hudayriyat?

Yes, but the cluster is smaller than at Saadiyat or Yas. Expect a handful of cafés, smoothie kiosks, and casual restaurants near the main beach and Surf Abu Dhabi entrance, leaning towards brunch, healthy, and grab-and-go food to match the active-day audience. The food offering is growing as the island expands.
