Emirates ID (EID) is the UAE's mandatory smart identity card, issued by ICP to every UAE resident — national or expat — within 30 days of residence-visa stamping. The Emirates ID number is the primary identifier across virtually every UAE government and banking service.
What it does
The card is required to sign tenancy contracts, open bank accounts, register for health services, enrol children in school, register vehicles, and access most government online services through UAE Pass. It contains biometric data (fingerprints, facial image) and is read at airport e-gates for fast border passage. Late renewal triggers a fine of AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000.
