New Year's Eve is the one night a year when Dubai shuts its main artery, runs the metro for 43 hours straight and moves close to three million passenger-trips — that was the shape of each of the last two editions, and the rules for getting into and, more importantly, out of Downtown have barely changed in years. This guide is for residents and visitors planning 31 December 2026 in Dubai: where the fireworks happen, which Downtown areas are free and which need tickets, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) closure and metro timetable, Dubai Police's safety set-up, and the law on alcohol, fireworks and drones. It draws on the official 2025/26 announcements from the Dubai Media Office, RTA, Dubai Police and Emaar, which organises the Burj Khalifa show, reflects the position as of August 2026, and sits under the UAE public holidays page.
Status as of August 2026 (2026/27 edition): 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, and Friday 1 January 2027 is a fixed public holiday under Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024. As of this update no 2026/27 operational details — fireworks map, RTA closures, Burj Park prices — have been published by the Dubai Media Office, RTA or Emaar. In recent editions the RTA traffic plan and the fireworks map have appeared only in the last week of December, and in 2025 Burj Park tickets went on sale in late November; the Dubai Shopping Festival ran 5 December 2025 to 11 January 2026, with 2026/27 dates still to be confirmed by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment. Everything below is the recent-years pattern — treat every timing and price as expected, not confirmed, until the Dubai Media Office, RTA and Emaar publish the 2026/27 plan.

How Dubai's New Year's Eve Works
The official fireworks map
Dubai licenses dozens of shows rather than one. For 2025/26 the Dubai Media Office and Dubai Police announced 48 displays at 40 locations, up from 36 at 29 for 2021/22: Burj Khalifa and Downtown, Dubai Creek Harbour, Palm Jumeirah (Atlantis The Palm, Atlantis The Royal and the Palm hotels), Bluewaters, Burj Al Arab, Al Seef, Dubai Festival City, Expo City, Global Village, Dubai Frame, and out to Bab Al Shams and Hatta. The stated aim is to thin the Downtown crowd. Almost every show fired at midnight; Global Village instead ran seven countdowns in 2025/26 — China at 8pm, Thailand 9pm, Bangladesh 10pm, India 10:30pm, Pakistan 11pm, Dubai midnight and Turkey 1am — with gates open 4pm to 2am.
Beyond Downtown the choice is geography, not ranking: Palm Jumeirah's boardwalk gives a free view of the Atlantis show, Dubai Marina and JBR beach face Bluewaters, Al Seef and Dubai Creek Harbour bracket the Creek, and Abu Dhabi's hotels are the out-of-town alternative. The scale — 9,884 police officers, 55 coordinating entities and 2,836,859 RTA passenger-trips in 2025/26, 13 per cent up on the year before — is why the timings below are so rigid.
1 January and the 2027 long weekend
New Year's Day is one of the two Gregorian-fixed holidays in Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, so Friday 1 January 2027 gives Monday-to-Friday workers a three-day weekend; the full 2027 table and the Eid Al Etihad closure pattern a month earlier — which is a useful rehearsal for what shuts on New Year's Day — are both on the public holidays page. A bonus from the 2025/26 precedent: RTA public parking was free on 1 January 2026, except multi-storey car parks and Al Khail Gate N-365.
Downtown Dubai: Free Zones, Tickets and Badges
The free public viewing areas
Emaar's NYE site, which as of August 2026 still carries the 2025/26 edition, says the public areas are free, family-friendly and first-come, first-served, with no tickets or badges, that LED screens along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard carry the live show, and that food and non-alcoholic beverages may be brought in. Capacity is the catch: reports of the 2025/26 plan named seven public gates — Boulevard Heights, Burj Vista, Emaar Square, the former Address Boulevard, Fountain Views, Address Downtown and Vida Dubai Mall — each closing once full, with separate family areas and areas for single men. "Free" therefore means "early": the Downtown programme started at 5pm and the lake-front gates filled before dark; the Business Bay side of the Dubai Water Canal is the fallback with a line of sight.
Burj Park: the ticketed option
Burj Park — the lawn at the foot of the tower that is the Burj Park running track the rest of the year — has been a paid, fenced venue since the 2023/24 edition. The 2025/26 pattern, from Emaar's FAQ and its ticketing partner Platinumlist:

Food trucks, toilets, kids' workshops and lost-and-found were inside; the draw is the uninterrupted view and a fixed exit route.
Hotels, restaurants, residents — and what a view costs
Every other Downtown vantage point runs on Emaar badges: restaurant and hotel guests receive them on confirming a reservation, valid only for that venue and with no vehicle priority once roads close, and Emaar residents register themselves and their guests through the Emaar One app before a published deadline — 10 December for the 2025/26 edition. Whatever the badge, the car stays put until 1–2am. The market prices the view hard: Khaleej Times reported on 11 December 2025 an Address Dubai Mall premier suite at AED 12,319 a night on a three-night minimum, an Armani Hotel suite at AED 45,000 a night on the same minimum, and restaurant seats in and around Dubai Mall at up to AED 12,000 a person — against which a Burj Park ticket is the cheapest guaranteed view.
Road Closures, Metro and Parking
The phased closure timetable
The RTA used the same staged structure in 2024/25 and 2025/26, which is what makes it plannable a year ahead:

Stopping or parking to watch from Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Dubai–Al Ain Road, Oud Metha Road or the other main roads around the event area is prohibited and policed. Outside Downtown, the RTA made Jumeirah Beach Residence pedestrian-only from 4pm — official taxis only on King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, and not even e-hail cars between 11pm and 1am — closed Bluewaters by roadblock once full, and shut the three pedestrian crossings of the Creek from 4pm.
Metro, tram and buses
In both recent editions the Red and Green lines ran continuously for 43 hours, from 5am on 31 December to 11:59pm on 1 January, and the tram from 6am on 31 December to 1am on 2 January. The catch is the station: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall was closed to entry from 5pm, or earlier at capacity, with crowds sent to Financial Centre and Business Bay — also the realistic exits after midnight. Park-and-ride stations promoted were Centrepoint, e&, National Paints (Jebel Ali) and Jumeirah Golf Estates. Intercity bus E100 from Al Ghubaiba to Abu Dhabi was suspended from the afternoon of 31 December (last departures noon from Abu Dhabi, 2pm from Al Ghubaiba) until 4 January; Sharjah residents should check the Sharjah–Dubai commute page.
Parking and shuttles
The RTA put 2025/26 provision at around 20,000 spaces in the Burj Khalifa area plus about 8,000 at metro stations, some 28,000 in all. The Emaar car parks — Boulevard, Zabeel and Fountain Views — filled by mid-afternoon and held the car inside the cordon until 1–2am. Free RTA shuttles ran from Al Omlaat Street behind Swissôtel Al Murooj from 4pm to 8pm, and after the show fed taxi collection points at Al Wasl Club and Al Kifaf. Normal Salik and Parkin charges apply.
Getting In and Getting Out
Step 1 — Decide by early December. Burj Park, restaurants and hotels all run on badges — Burj Park badges were collected 26–30 December in 2025, none issued on the day. Going free, pick a gate and agree a meeting point outside the cordon.
Step 2 — Arrive before the closures. On the recent pattern, drivers need to be parked before 4pm and metro users inside Downtown before 5pm, when Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station stopped admitting passengers. Emaar's 2025/26 advice was to be in position before 4pm.
Step 3 — Plan the exit before midnight. The show ends minutes after midnight and in 2025/26 the metro alone carried 1.25 million trips on the night. Wait 45–60 minutes where you are, walk to Financial Centre or Business Bay rather than Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, or take the shuttle to the Al Wasl Club or Al Kifaf taxi points. Drivers inside the cordon should expect a 1–2am release.
Step 4 — Know the taxi economics. RTA taxis are metered whether hailed or booked through partner apps such as Careem (Hala) and S'hail: since the RTA's November 2025 fare revision an app booking has a minimum fare of AED 13 and a time-banded booking fee of AED 4 to AED 7.50 (highest in peak hours), while a street hail keeps the AED 12 minimum. Private-hire cars on ride-hailing apps price on demand.
Families, Safety and the Law
Children and emergencies
The 2025/26 set-up was built around families: 37 Dubai Police assistance tents offering first aid, lost-and-found and care for lost children, a field hospital with a paediatric section near Burj Khalifa, and public beaches designated family-only for the night. Emergency numbers are 999 (police), 998 (ambulance), 997 (fire) and 901 for non-emergency police help; see emergency care for how A&E works. Global Village's early countdowns, 8pm and 9pm in 2025/26, suit families (kids' activities has more options), and a phone number written on a young child's wrist costs nothing.
Alcohol and public behaviour
Alcohol is served only in licensed venues to guests aged 21 and over, and drinking or being drunk in a public place is an offence in the UAE; the event rules follow: Emaar permits only non-alcoholic drinks in the free public viewing areas and lists alcohol among the items banned from Burj Park. The UAE Government portal's social responsibility page (updated 30 December 2024) also lists noise disruptions, bad language and obscene gestures as forbidden and liable to "legal trouble and deportation", and drink-driving penalties are on the traffic fines page — drink only where you are seated and leave on the metro.
Fireworks and drones
Private fireworks are illegal: Dubai Police reiterated in May 2026 that under Federal Decree-Law No. 17 of 2019, Article 54, unlicensed trading, importing, manufacturing or transporting of fireworks carries at least one year's imprisonment and a fine of at least AED 100,000, or either. Drones: the General Civil Aviation Authority's Safety Decision 2026-03 of 28 February 2026 temporarily suspended all commercial and recreational drone operations in UAE airspace, and the GCAA reaffirmed the suspension in March 2026; industry reporting says operations were cleared to resume from 30 June 2026, but the position in December 2026, and the clearance Dubai requires, must be checked against the GCAA's current safety decisions and the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority before any flight. Separately, Emaar bars drones and tripods from Burj Park without prior authorisation.
